What is blood pressure monitering test (BPM), and why is it recommended?

It is normal for your blood pressure to change during the day due to factors like anxiety, diet, exercise, sleep, or any blood pressure medication you may take. As a result, taking a single blood pressure measurement in the clinic is not always the most accurate way of assessing your overall blood pressure. To get a more comprehensive understanding, your doctor may request a test that measures your blood pressure at different times over a 24-hour or specific period of time, especially if you are suspected of having high or low blood pressure or experiencing symptoms like fainting.

Fitting and wearing the monitor

A professional technision will fit the inflatable cuff on the arm of your choice. It should sit comfortably around your arm so please reposition it if needed. If the cuff moves during the monitoring period, the results may not be accurate. The cuff is connected to a small monitor, which you will wear around your waist clipped into a belt or waistband. It takes about 10-15 minutes to fit the cuff and monitor.

Important Note

It is a good idea to wear a loose-fitting top or shirt to your appointment as this makes it easier to fit the monitor.

Avoiding interference

To avoid interference with the device and ensure accurate test results, follow these guidelines:

Avoid getting the device wet: Keep the device and cuff dry at all times by avoiding activities like showering, bathing, or swimming while the test is ongoing.

Limit physical activity: Strenuous exercises or heavy lifting can affect the accuracy of the readings, so try to engage in normal activities but avoid vigorous physical exertion.

Refrain from adjusting or removing the cuff: The cuff should remain in its proper position on your arm for accurate readings. Don’t tamper with or remove the device unless instructed.

Stay still during measurements: The device will automatically inflate to take measurements at different intervals. To get accurate readings, try to remain still and relaxed when you feel the cuff inflating.

Wear loose clothing: Ensure the device and cuff fit comfortably and that your clothing does not obstruct the cuff, which could interfere with the test results.

Maintain your normal routine: As much as possible, stick to your regular diet, sleep, and medication schedule to capture an accurate reflection of your typical blood pressure fluctuations.

By following these steps, you can help protect the device and ensure reliable results from your 24-hour blood pressure test.

Returning the device

Once you have completed the test, please remove the device and the patches and keep it safe. We will collect the device. Prompt return of the device is essential to avoid delays in testing for other patients.

Results

Once you have returned your device, one of the team will analyse your recording and produce a report within 72 hours. All the results are put into the electronic patient record system. These results are then available immediately for your doctor to look at.
